Meet the Expert: Dr. Ulyana Horodyskyj, Glaciologist
Dr. Ulyana Horodyskyj is a scientist, mountaineer and educator based near Denver, Colorado. She received her PhD in geological sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder and, in 2016, started Science in the Wild, a citizen science company focused on creating immersive and educational adventure science expeditions for the lay public. Ulyana is a national fellow of The Explorers Club in New York City, a certified polar (Arctic and Antarctic) guide with the Polar Tourism Guides Association (PTGA), visiting assistant professor at Colorado College in the environmental program, and an associate scientist with the North Central Climate Adaptation Science Center at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Challenge: Create a Core from a Cupcake!
Get some vanilla and chocolate cake mix, some chocolate chips, food coloring, and a few other types of chips or candies. Make the batter, then layer the batter and fillings in the cupcake paper. Bake as directed. When cooled, take a large straw and push it into the cupcake. Remove the cupcake “core” from the straw and see if you can analyze it. Then eat it!
